Mr ZHAO Jia-nan studied the cello as a child with his mother and was eventually admitted into the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned Chinese cello educators, Professor Yu Ming-qing and Professor Chen Yuan.
In 1985, Jia-nan was awarded a full scholarship to further his music studies at the Drake University in the United States, where he received his Bachelors. Having graduated with honours, he was admitted into the Mannes College of Music and following that was awarded another full scholarship to study the cello in the School of Music at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in Canada.
After attaining his Masters degree from UBC, Jia-nan was appointed Principal Cellist of the Mannes Symphony Orchestra as well as Associate Principal Cellist of the City of Des Moines’ Symphony Orchestra.
Jia-nan has participated in Masterclasses with world-renowned cellists including Yo-yo Ma, Lyn Harrel, David Geber, Raphel Wallfisch, and Peter Wiley. He has given many solo and chamber music concerts at various music halls such as the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Chan Center for Performing Arts.
In his role as an educator, his efforts have been recognised by bestowment of honorary titles such as The Dedicated Young Teacher (Beijing), while his students go on to become competition winners.
Recognized in Beijing as a Youth Talent and an Outstanding Individual, he has been invited to give lectures in the United States, Australia, South Korea and Singapore amongst others.
